At All Saints, we have worked alongside the Harrogate and Rural Teaching School Alliance to trial and develop new systems for assessing the new curriculum without level descriptors. The ‘Beyond Levels’ project has enabled us to find the most appropriate way to undertake on-going assessment.
Children in the Early Years (Reception Year) will be assessed using the EYFS ages and stages. Each child will be assessed on entry to Reception (baseline)using a government approved assessment programme (Early Excellence. They will be assessed throughout theyear using the EYFS framework through observation and small group activities. Baseline, on-going assessment and final assessments will be moderated between a group of schools in the cluster. At the end of Foundation Stage, the children will be assessed as meeting the expected level (Early Learning Goals), exceeding the expected standard or emerging towards the expected standard. This will be reported to parents in the end of year report.
In all year groups from Year 1 upwards we are using the new assessment formats for English, Maths, Science and foundation subjects (History, Geography, Art, Music, Computing, DT, RE, PE and PSHE). The new assessment procedures evaluate how well children are doing against age related expectations. All formative and summative assessment is used to improve teaching and learning, support a child to understand the next steps in their learning and ultimately raise attainment and progress. Children will be assessed as working at the beginning of year group expectations, working within or working securely/beyond the expectations.
In Year 2 and 6 end of year nationally standardised summative assessments will be completed.
At the end of Year 2, the children will be tested on reading, spelling, punctuation and grammar and maths using nationally prescribed tests. They will also be teacher assessed using the new interim arrangements provided by the government. They will be teacher assessed as working at the expected level, working towards the expected level or working at greater depth. Test results will be given as a raw score which will be converted into a standardised score. The standardised score of 100 will be an expected level for the end of year 2.
At the end of Year 6, children will be tested as in previous years with reading, spelling, punctuation and grammar and maths tests. Tests will take place in May 2016 as specified gy the DFE. Test results will be published in July 2016 as a raw score, conversion into a standardised score (100 being the expected level for end of Year 6) and whether a child has achieved the expected level. Teacher assessment will also take place using the interim arrangements provided by the government for the end of Year 6 in Summer 2016. They will be assessed as working within the expected level, working towards the expected level or working at a greater depth.
Parents evening meetings will focus on your child’s progress, next steps in their learning and where your child is in relation to national year group expectations. If you have any queries about our new system, please ask your child’s class teacher.
